3The code or message

Codes mean different things on different brands, so pick your exact model.Where is my model number?

Pick one to see how the lookup works, or choose your appliance above.

Short answer

Find the brand and model on the appliance label, then look up the code for that exact model, because the same code means different things on different brands. Most RV codes point to something you can check yourself first: propane supply, 12-volt power, 120-volt power or a blocked vent. Fix the cause, then reset the appliance. If the code keeps coming back, write it down with the model and serial number before you call for service.

RV water heater error codes

Tank water heaters (Suburban, Atwood) mostly use a lockout light. Tankless units (Girard, Furrion, Truma) show numbered codes or flash patterns. Most point to propane supply, water flow or 12-volt power.

Cummins Onan QD 10000 / 12500 diesel error codes

Models: RV QD 10000 and QD 12500 diesel (HDKCA and HDKCB series, Spec F to H)

After a fault shutdown, count the blinks on the status light in the start/stop switch: 1 blink is engine too hot, 2 blinks is low oil pressure, 3 blinks is a service fault and 4 blinks is over crank. For 3 blinks, press STOP/PRIME once and the light blinks a two-digit code, tens first, a short pause, then the ones (code 36 is 3 blinks, pause, 6 blinks), and if the blinking has stopped, press STOP/PRIME 3 times within 5 seconds to see it again.

Where it shows: Blinks of the status light on the start/stop switch

CodeWhat it meansCheck first
1 The engine coolant got too hot (over 239°F for 10 seconds), so the generator shut down. Let the generator cool down before you touch anything.
2 Low oil pressure. The oil pressure switch shut the engine down to protect it. Park level and check the dipstick.
3 Service fault. Three blinks means a two-digit code is stored and you need to read it. Press STOP/PRIME once. The light will now blink the two-digit code.
4 Over crank. The engine cranked for 30 seconds without starting. Check the fuel level and fill the tank if it is low.
12 Over voltage. The control could not hold the output voltage at the right level. Write down the code plus the model and serial number from the generator nameplate.
13 Under voltage. The control could not hold the output voltage up, usually because the load is too big. Turn off some appliances, mainly air conditioners and battery chargers.
14 Over frequency. The engine governor could not hold the right speed, so the output frequency ran high. Write down the code plus the model and serial number from the generator nameplate.
15 Under frequency. The engine governor could not hold the right speed, usually because the load is too big. Turn off some appliances, mainly air conditioners and battery chargers.
19 Governor actuator fault. The control found an open or shorted circuit in the part that moves the throttle. Write down the code plus the model and serial number from the generator nameplate.
22 Governor actuator overload. The engine has been working near full throttle for too long. Turn off some appliances, mainly air conditioners and battery chargers.
27 Voltage sense fault. The control cannot read the generator output voltage. Write down the code plus the model and serial number from the generator nameplate.
29 High battery voltage. The generator saw more than 19 volts on its battery. Check how the batteries that serve the generator are wired. They must be in parallel for 12 volts.
32 Low cranking speed. The engine turned slower than 180 RPM for more than 2 seconds while cranking. Clean and tighten the battery cables at the battery and at the generator.
35 Control card failure. The control found a memory (EEPROM) error during its self test. Write down the code plus the model and serial number from the generator nameplate.
36 Engine stopped. The engine quit on its own without a stop command from the control. Check the fuel level and fill the tank if it is low.
38 Over current (field overload). The generator was overloaded by loads like motors and compressors. Turn off some appliances, mainly air conditioners and battery chargers.
41 Generator rotor fault. The control cannot read the field or output voltage. Write down the code plus the model and serial number from the generator nameplate.

RV AC and thermostat error codes

Wall thermostats show these codes, not the rooftop unit. Most point to a sensor, lost contact with the control board in the roof unit, or no 120-volt power.

Coleman-Mach (Airxcel RV Products) 9330 multi-zone thermostat · Coleman-Mach (Airxcel RV Products) 9420 digital thermostat · Coleman-Mach (Airxcel RV Products) 9630 heat pump thermostat · Dometic CT touch thermostat · Dometic CCC 2 multi-zone thermostat · Dometic CCC 2 thermostat with dehumidify · Dometic Single Zone LCD thermostat · Furrion (Lippert) Chill Cube rooftop AC · Furrion (Lippert) Chill enhanced thermostat (FACW10ESSA) · Furrion (Lippert) Chill single zone thermostat (FACW10SA)

Coleman-Mach (Airxcel RV Products) 9330 multi-zone thermostat error codes

Models: 9330-33* multi-zone digital thermostat for RV Products zone control boxes (up to 4 zones)

This thermostat shows "Er" in the temperature space when it cannot read a good temperature. The green LED on the control board in the ceiling unit tells you if the 12-volt control power is good.

Where it shows: Word on the thermostat display, plus a green LED on the A/C control board

CodeWhat it meansCheck first
Er The temperature is outside what the thermostat can read, or one of the remote temperature sensors has a problem. Switch through the zones with the ZONE button and note which zone shows Er.
Gas (flashing) Electric heat (heat pump or heat strip) could not keep up three times in a row, so it is locked out for 2 hours and the gas furnace is now the main heat. This is normal, not a fault. Nothing to fix. The thermostat goes back to electric heat after the 2-hour lockout.
Green LED off The green LED on the control board (seen through an opening in the control box in the return air area) is off, which means the 12-volt control power is not good enough to run the system. Check the RV battery and charge it with shore power or the generator.

Coleman-Mach (Airxcel RV Products) 9420 digital thermostat error codes

Models: Digital wall thermostat 9420*381 and 9420*382 (knob control)

This thermostat does not list numbered error codes. It shows a few words and blinking parts that tell you what the system is doing. If the screen goes dead, it has a self-resetting fuse that opens when the wiring is wrong or shorted.

Where it shows: Word or blinking part of the thermostat display

How to reset: Manual reboot from the guide: press and hold the knob for about 12 seconds. At 4 seconds it shows the units screen. After 4 more seconds a countdown starts. When the countdown ends and the screen turns off, let go of the knob and it reboots. A reboot is also needed after any DIP switch change.

CodeWhat it meansCheck first
LO The room temperature is below 33 degrees F, which is under the range the screen can show. Warm the RV and see if a normal temperature comes back.
HI The room temperature is above 99 degrees F, which is over the range the screen can show. Open the RV, run the A/C and see if a normal temperature comes back.
Mode segment blinking The 3-minute short cycle delay is running. The compressor or electric heat waits 3 minutes after it last shut off before it can start again. Wait 3 minutes. The thermostat goes back to normal on its own.
Elec (flashing) The gas furnace is running as backup because the electric heat could not keep up. After three strikes, electric heat is turned off for 1 hour 45 minutes and gas becomes the main heat. Nothing to fix. Electric heat comes back as the main heat after the lockout ends.

Where it shows: Code on the thermostat display

How to reset: The manual lists a system initialization that the installer does after setup. Make sure the thermostat is off. Press the up (+) button and at the same time press and hold the On/Off Mode button for three seconds. The screen shows "- -". On the Bluetooth model this also deletes all paired phones, so you must pair them again.

CodeWhat it meansCheck first
E1 The thermostat lost contact with the module board in the air conditioner, so the system shuts down. Watch the screen. With E1 it switches back and forth between E1 and the last mode you picked.
E2 The indoor temperature sensor reads as open or out of range. Heating and cooling are locked out, but the fan still works. Use fan mode to move air until the sensor is fixed.
E3 The indoor temperature sensor is shorted. Heating and cooling are locked out, but the fan still works. Use fan mode to move air until the sensor is fixed.
E4 The outdoor temperature sensor reads as open or out of range (only on some models). The heat pump is locked out, but cooling, fan and furnace still work. Use furnace mode for heat until the sensor is fixed.

Dometic CCC 2 multi-zone thermostat error codes

Models: Comfort Control Center 2 (CCC 2) programmable multi-zone thermostat, model 3314080 (.000 black, .015 white), up to 4 zones

On the CCC 2, a blinking zone number during normal use means a fault happened in that zone. Select that zone and the error code shows where the set temperature normally is.

Where it shows: Code on the thermostat display, in place of the set temperature for the zone that has the fault

How to reset: System reset from the manual: put the CCC 2 in OFF mode. Press and hold the MODE and ZONE buttons at the same time. The screen shows "IniT" and all zones it finds. Let go of both buttons, then press ON/OFF to exit setup. A reset brings back the factory settings, so you will need to set your temperatures again. The manual says a reset is needed after a memory loss or any DIP switch change.

CodeWhat it meansCheck first
E1 The thermostat lost contact with the power module board in one zone, or with all of them. If all boards are lost, the whole system shuts down. If only one is lost, the screen shows E1 with that zone number. Note which zone number shows E1 or is blinking. Other zones that lose contact will blink too.
E2 The indoor temperature sensor reads as open or out of range. All heating and cooling are locked out, but manual fan still works. Use manual fan to move air until the sensor is fixed.
E3 The indoor temperature sensor is shorted. All heating and cooling are locked out, but manual fan still works. Use manual fan to move air until the sensor is fixed.
E4 The outdoor temperature sensor reads as open or out of range (only on some models). The heat pump is locked out, but cooling, furnace, heat strip and fan still work. Use the furnace or heat strip for heat until the sensor is fixed.
E5 The freeze sensor reads as open or out of range. Cooling is locked out. Heat pump, furnace, heat strip and fan still work, and the screen shows the last set temperature. Use fan mode to move air until the sensor is fixed.
E7 None of the power module boards are getting 120-volt power, so the system shuts down. If you are on a generator, make sure it is running and making power.
E8 Zone setup is invalid: the heat pump and heat strip DIP switches are both ON for one zone. Heat pump, heat strip and A/C are locked out in that zone. Note which zone shows the code.
E9 Zone setup is invalid: the dehumidifier DIP switch and the heat pump or heat strip DIP switch are both ON for one zone. Heat pump, heat strip and A/C are locked out in that zone. Note which zone shows the code.

Smell propane or ammonia? Do not reset the appliance and try again. Turn it off, close the propane tank valve, air out the RV and call a tech.

Common questions

What does “no FL” mean on a Norcold RV fridge?

“no FL” means no flame: the propane burner did not light, or it lit and then went out. Check that the propane tank has gas and its valve is open, then light a stove burner to push air out of the line. Turn the fridge off and back on to make it try again. It shows on Norcold N64X/N84X, N1095, 1200-series, 1210/1211, 2117 and 2118 fridges. Our Norcold error code guide covers the fixes in detail.

What does code 36 mean on an Onan RV generator?

On Cummins Onan QG 2800, 4000, 5500 and 7000 gasoline generators and QD diesels, code 36 means the engine stopped on its own without a stop command. Running out of fuel is the first thing to check, because Cummins says the generator’s fuel pickup is usually set so the generator runs out before the engine does. On the newer inverter models (QG 2800i, 4000i and 7000i), code 36 means a different fault, so look up your exact model. See why an Onan generator keeps shutting off for the full checks.

What does E1 mean on a Dometic RV thermostat?

On Dometic single zone, CT touch and CCC 2 thermostats, E1 means the thermostat lost contact with the control board in the rooftop air conditioner. When all boards are lost, the system shuts down. On a CCC 2, the zone number that blinks shows which unit lost contact. Our Dometic thermostat error code guide walks through each code and the reset.

What do E4 and E7 mean on a Dometic thermostat?

E4 means the outdoor temperature sensor reads open or out of range. It only applies to some models: the heat pump locks out, but cooling and the furnace still work. On CCC 2 thermostats, E7 means none of the power module boards in the air conditioners are getting 120-volt power, so check shore power, the generator and the AC breakers.

What does E1 mean on an RV tankless water heater?

On Girard GSWH-2 and Furrion F2GWH tankless water heaters, E1 means the burner did not light, or the flame went out while lighting, and the heater locks out after two tries. Check that the propane tank has gas and its valve is open. On the Furrion 2.4 GPM models, E1 means no flame was sensed while the heater tried to light. See RV water heater won’t light for the checks.

Why does the same code mean different things on different RVs?

Each maker numbers its own faults. E3 on a Norcold N15DC 12-volt fridge means the voltage went too low or too high, while E3 on a Dometic thermostat means the indoor temperature sensor is shorted. Always look up the code for your brand and model, which you will find on the label of the appliance.

Where do I find the model number on an RV appliance?

Look for the rating label or nameplate on the appliance itself. On most RV fridges it is inside the fresh food compartment. On water heaters and furnaces it is usually behind the outside access door, and generators carry a nameplate on the housing. Write down the model and serial number before you look up a code or call for service.

How do I clear an RV error code?

Fix the cause first, then reset the appliance the way its manual says. Many clear when you turn the appliance off and back on, and some thermostats have their own reset steps, which the lookup shows when the manual gives them. If the same code comes back after the checks, write it down with the model and serial number before you call for service.
